Online reputation is critical to survival in the retail industry, as 90% of consumers read online reviews before making a purchase. Although a retailer’s reputation isn’t built in a day — in can be destroyed in minutes. All it takes for the tables to turn is for one customer to write about a bad experience in a review or social post that goes viral.

Since the rise in importance of online reviews and social media, retailers who have previously dominated the space are now competing head to head with other retailers who deliver better service and value to discriminating shoppers. And that reality is revealed in our 2018 Retail Reputation Report.

During this session, Brad Null, Chief Scientist and Head of Data Science, will discuss the findings of our sweeping report, which reveals which retailers performed best for critical service categories such as value, service, wait times, convenience and more. The report was compiled by Reputation.com’s data science team, which applied artificial intelligence, machine learning and sentiment analysis to the unstructured text in more than 4.7 million customer reviews of more than 30,000 locations owned by 88 U.S. retailers.

Key findings in the report include:

· A high Reputation Score leads to a 3.9% impact on store sales.
· The average Reputation Score was 538 on a scale of 1,000.
· LEGO Store and Barnes & Noble consistently ranked high in a number of categories.
· 13 retailers experienced a decline in their average star rating from 2017 to 2018, while 71 saw their average star rating increase.
· Staff competence at Best Buy was judged by shoppers to be far superior to Apple’s renowned Genius Bar (4.3. stars v. 3.6). And Best Buy’s managers were also ranked higher than those at Apple stores (2.3 stars v. 1.7).

In addition to elaborating on these key findings, Brad will explain what retailers can do to improve the customer experience to earn better ratings and higher rankings in Google search, drive traffic, and delight and retain customers.
