Born and raised in the UK, Hamish Khayat founded BURST Oral Care alongside co-founder Brittany Stewart with the goal of revolutionizing the sonic oral care industry by providing consumers with affordable and high-quality products. At launch in 2017, Hamish developed BURST’s unique subscription, direct ship business model and currently oversees all design decisions in creating the all-encompassing line of oral care products.
Hamish began pursuing his passion in the industry whilst at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. There he invented a self-standing kids’ toothbrush and launched the brand The Rockabilly Kids. While working with retailers in the UK, he realized the incredible markup that big-name brands were earning on electric toothbrushes and their subsequent replacement heads. Looking to change this but accepting that the English are not quite famous for looking after their teeth, Hamish set his sights on the American oral care industry. Hamish originally conceptualized BURST during visits to factories in China for The Rockabilly Kids, knowing that the American market was a more mature fit for direct to consumer sales and quickly made a move to the United States with nothing but a prototype, a backpack and a fold- up bicycle in search of a cofounder who understood E-commerce and America better than he.
Alongside Brittany Stewart, Hamish has cultivated a culture of honesty, transparency and dedication that empowers their employees to act cohesively as a team. In addition to the BURST team, Hamish has enlisted the support of thousands of dental professionals throughout the product development whose advice has proved invaluable. These professionals have become huge advocates of BURST’s product offering and ethos and are proud to recommend the companies affordable, effective oral care to their patients. To date the BURST ambassador program is the backbone of the direct ship business model and is made up of nearly 20,000 dental professionals who have earned over $3 million in commission in the last 1.5 years from BURST alone. In an industry dominated by several large players with very large marketing budgets, Hamish saw the value in taking this new approach to enter the market with products that outperform existing players and a well-oiled business model that continues to win BURST substantial attention with consumers for a lot less marketing dollars.
Establishing BURST in the midst of a stale oral care industry shows the great independent thinker that Hamish is. It is no surprise that Forbes recently named him in their prestigious 30 under 30 list. Being a disruptor in the oral care industry, Hamish continues to expand the BURST community and give them more unique products to be able to recommend to their patients with each product performing better, looking better and available at an accessible cost. With social impact as a personal priority, Hamish remains closely involved with The Pink Foundation, the Dr. Susan Love Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica.
